    Women’ Rugby World Cup Team

    Thursday, July 1st, 2010

    For Immediate Release
    June 30, 2010

U.S. Releases its Team, Assembly Details for the Women’s Rugby World Cup   BOULDER, Colo. – The USA Women’s National Rugby Team has officially announced the roster of 26 players and four reserves who are set to assemble in the weeks leading up to the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup (WRWC) in England.   “It is never an easy task to trim down a squad we have been working with for almost four years,” said Women’s National Rugby Team Coach Kathy Flores. “With the 2010 World Cup less than two months away, we are working to prepare for every variable possible and select according to the needs of the team, in regards to the commitment and dedication of each individual and their contribution to the squad.”   Assembling on July 10, the USA squad will hold a residency camp at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine for three weeks before departing for England.   “The U.S. Women will feel right at home in the college’s top-notch residential and athletic facilities,” Women’s High Performance Manager, Alex Williams said. “Bowdoin is home to one of the few women’s varsity rugby programs in the country and it’s a great environment for the intense final preparations prior to the World Cup.”   The residency camp will include a lot of individual and unit skill work, along with strength and conditioning sessions, video analysis, and creating game plans for its upcoming RWC pool matches. Brought into the camp will be additional skill specialists, sports psychologists, nutritionists and select media personnel who will all work with the players and staff in preparation for the team’s biggest event of the quadrennial.   The National Team’s time at Bowdoin College won’t be all work and no play, however. On July 12, the USA Women’s Team will host an Under-19 rugby clinic for new and upcoming Under-19 female players and then on July 25, the Women’s National Team will play the Northeast Rugby Union All-Star Women’s Team in a final Women’s Rugby World Cup warm-up match for the Eagles.   The U.S. will also have one week of preparation and acclimatization once landing in England, prior to the kick-off of the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup.   The 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup features the top 12 teams from around the world. The teams are sorted into three pools and will play pool opponents on three match days through August. The fifth-ranked USA Women’s Team is in Pool B along with second-seeded England, Ireland and Kazakhstan.   The USA will face the 11th-ranked Kazakhstan, first, on Friday, August 20. Four days later, the USA will play the eighth-seed, Ireland side, on August 24 and will finish against England on August 28.   “We don’t have the luxury to look past any team at the Women’s Rugby World Cup,” Flores added. “While we were playing Canada in June, Kazakhstan played close matches with South Africa. Ireland is lining up practice competition in the coming month and I am sure England will be training and lining up practice matches as well. No team is taking anything for granted in this event.”   The U.S. Women’s Rugby World Cup Team includes: Forwards Sharon Blaney (Beantown) Stacey Bridges (Texas A&M) Jamie Burke (Beantown) Lisa Butts (Berkeley All-Blues) Melanie Denham (Beantown) Farrah Douglas (Keystone) Blair Groefsema (Berkeley All-Blues) Phaidra Knight (New York) Jillion Potter (Minnesota Valkyries) Beckett Royce (Oregon Sports Union) Lara Vivolo (New York) Kittery Wagner (Beantown) Maurin Wallace (Beantown) Kristin Zdanczewicz (Minnesota Valkyries)   Backs Claudia Braymer (Albany) Emilie Bydwell (Beantown) Amy Daniels (Beantown) Ashley English (Berkeley All-Blues) Victoria Folayan (Berkeley All-Blues) Melissa Kanuk (Minnesota Valkyries) Ashley Kmiecik (Oregon Sports Union) Lynelle Kugler (Twin Cities Amazons) Kim Magrini (Keystone) Nathalie Marchino (Berkeley All-Blues) Vanesha McGee (New York) Christy Ringgenberg (Minnesota Valkyries)   Reserves Stephanie Bruce (Berkeley All-Blues) Kate Daley (Keystone) Naima Reddick (Berkeley All-Blues) Hannah Stolba (Minnesota Valkyries)   For more information on the Women’s National Team, please visit www.usarugby.org/goto/women_eagles. Rugby World Cup to Make US Network TV Debut

Rugby World Cup matches will be broadcast on US network television for the first time after the International Rugby Board announced that NBC Sports and Universal Sports have been awarded the exclusive rights to the 2011 tournament in New Zealand and the 2015 tournament in England.
The groundbreaking deal, announced by IRB Chief Executive Mike Miller in New York today, will see the final of each Rugby World Cup broadcast on NBC and Universal Sports network as a key element of a multi-platform approach that will ensure unprecedented television and digital media coverage in the United States of all 48 matches from Rugby’s premier event.
Under the deal, NBC and Universal Sports has also committed to broadcasting other key matches from each tournament, while live and delayed match video will also be accessible at www.universalsports.com and on Universal Sports’ mobile platforms. Universal Sports’ and NBC Sports’ match coverage will feature a studio pre-match show, halftime and post-match reaction and all the action will be broadcast in high definition.
IRB Chief Executive Mike Miller said: “Today’s announcement represents a significant milestone in the development of Rugby in the United States. NBC and Universal Sports are globally renowned for quality broadcast delivery of major sports events in the United States and their considerable experience and passion for sport will deliver the widespread platform for Rugby World Cup to truly capture the hearts and minds of American sports fans.”
“The announcement further underscores the sport’s rapidly growing profile in emerging Rugby markets, further accelerated by the IOC’s decision to include Rugby Sevens in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Sports fans across America will be able to look forward to a Rugby World Cup that will showcase the very best that our sport has to offer. I am sure that it will be a hit.”
Universal Sports Chief Executive Officer David Sternberg said: “This is a very significant rights acquisition for Universal Sports, especially given the growing popularity of Rugby around the world and in America. We are delighted to be partnering with the IRB for the Rugby World Cup and other top events, and we look forward to showcasing global Rugby, at its highest level, for our audiences across all of our platforms—television, online and mobile.”
The deal enhances Universal Sports’ commitment to Rugby in the United States and reflects growing interest in the sport following the International Olympic Committee’s decision to include Rugby Sevens in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The network has also broadcast the US College Sevens and the Churchill Cup this year, bringing Rugby to the attention of more sports fans across the country than ever before.

    Men’s Collegiate All-Americans Announce 2010 Fundraising Campaign

    Men’s Collegiate All-Americans Announce 2010 Fundraising Campaign

BOULDER, Colo. – USA Rugby’s All-American Program has recently announced the launch of its 2010 fundraising drive for its 12-day tour to London in August.

The All-American Program’s purpose is to not only identify and reward the best collegiate players in the country, but to also further develop their talents by challenging them with international competition against some of the best aspiring elite players in the world.

This year’s tour will include three matches in London against a combination of National League and Premiership Development/Academy Sides with Saracens Academy being one of the anticipated marquee opponents.

In addition to the opportunity to develop as players, the tour also hopes to develop relationships with oversees teams, such as the Saracens, who are interested in the best up and coming American talent, and for those players to show what they can do on the rugby field.

The All-American selection in itself is a tremendous honor to Americas best collegiate rugby talent and has long been a precursor to international honors, with many All-Americans graduating to the USA National Team.

As All-American head coach Alex Magleby notes, this will be a great opportunity to take the next generation of Eagles on a challenging tour to a home nation to test and develop them as players.

“As in year’s past, we will endeavor to expose our best collegiate players to the pressures of international competition,” Magleby said. “One of the All-American program’s KPIs is to not only find future Eagles in each year’s group, but to help accelerate their development from collegiate rugby-athlete to senior Eagle. Playing against professional academies in the UK offers that opportunity.”

USA Rugby Releases its Men’s Collegiate All-Americans

    Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

USA Rugby Releases its Men’s Collegiate All-Americans   BOULDER, Colo. – Following the USA Rugby Men’s Collegiate All-Star Championships this weekend, selectors announced their list of Collegiate All-Americans and Honorable Mentions.   “With a pool of approximately 15,000 men’s collegiate players across the U.S., the Collegiate All-American selectors and coaches spent nearly nine months on player identification, fitness testing, standards implementation and monitoring to narrow the list to 37 All-Americans and 29 Honorable Mentions,” said All-American Coach Alex Magleby.

The All American Team is made up of the nation’s best collegiate rugby players who are picked annually on the basis of performance over the course of the domestic collegiate rugby season, the National Collegiate Championships, and the Collegiate National All-Star Championship.   The All-American team has long been a precursor to international honors, with many All-Americans graduating to the USA National Team.

“Congratulations to our collegiate players and coaches–fitness and skill levels once again exceeded those from previous years,” Magleby added. “The standards continue to improve with healthier high school programs coupled with progress in collegiate player development and coaching. Now comes the equally challenging task of picking an All-American tour team.”    The All-American and Honorable Mentions are selected from players who attend a domestic American University and compete for an American University Team, while the selection process for the All-American Touring Team, which will be announced soon, could potentially include players eligible to play for America, who are studying at Universities domestically or abroad.
