IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy Set for Kick Off
Lineups, Host Broadcaster Named
NAIROBI, Kenya – The IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy gets underway on Tuesday in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi with eight teams hoping to get their hands on the silverware and prize of promotion to the IRB Junior World Championship in 2010.
Papua New Guinea will make their debut at this level in the opening match against Romania, which kicks off at 12:00 p.m. local time at Impala. The other Pool B match, between 2008 runners up Chile and Korea will get action underway at the nearby RFUEA Ground at 2 p.m.
At the same time, on the Impala pitch, USA – the side relegated after finishing bottom of the IRB Junior World Championship standings in Wales last year – face another side breaking new ground, the Cayman Islands.
The Cayman Islands have already written their own piece of history simply by qualifying for the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy, becoming their nation’s first team to secure a place in an IRB international 15-a-side tournament.
Captain Daniel McGrath admits his side “want to show the world that we have the quality to play here,” but the USA will be looking to dominate the match from early on with an immediate return to the Junior World Championship their target.
Head Coach Salty Thompson has officially named the lineup for the match (below) and believes his team has settled in fairly well.
“We had two practices on Saturday, one on Sunday and a captains run at Impala Stadium today,” said Thompson. “Twelve of the 15 starters on Tuesday are new caps leaving Nick Johnson, Ryan McTiernan; Zack Test and Mike Shepherd as the returners from Wales last June.
“I’m excited to see our squad open against the Caymans,” added Thompson. “We faced them in the NAWIRA Tournament in 2006 and they were the best team in the event. Even though we managed a 30-point winning margin, Richard Adam’s young squad showed a lot of promise. Three years later that same core is significantly better.
“Our players have set performance goals that are both realistic and achievable,” finished Thompson. “If they stay focused and on task, the outcomes will be favorable.”
The International Rugby Board announced that the Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) will be the Host Broadcaster for the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy. KBC will broadcast free-to-air coverage of all 16 matches, giving Rugby fans in Kenya unprecedented access to the key international development tournament and unlocking the door to new audiences across a country where Rugby is enjoying unprecedented growth thanks to the performances of the Kenyan Sevens team.
If you don’t receive KBC, you might be able to view the games via the web at http://www.jumptv.com/en/channel/kbc/.
